“Port’ Inglês” is the title of Carmen Souza’s eleventh album. Carmen, who has lived in England for the past 15 years, uses music to explore the unexpected ties between her homeland of Cape Verde and the United Kingdom, a country that has long nurtured her creativity. This new collection of songs, composed as a musical suite, is rooted in insularity. The lyrics and music reveal little-known stories, the result of the encounter of two very different cultures and their impact on Cape Verde after centuries of English presence.
Of Cape Verdean descent, born in Lisbon and based in London, Carmen Souza is one of Europe’s most sought-after jazz singers. After the disappearance of Cesária Évora, Carmen Souza was designated one of the archipelago’s musical ambassadors. Her style is unique, and her roots are as evident as her desire to create a new language under the label “World Jazz.”
